Thank You #Micklegate Cllr Julie Gunnel for ten years of service to the people of #York

We call Micklegate a rainbow ward because it is currently represented by three different councillors with three different political backgrounds. Currently Cllr Julie Gunnell (Labour)serves alongside independent Cllr Johnny Hayes and myself from the Green Party.

Last weekend Cllr Gunnell announced that she is stepping down as Councillor. Even if the decision did not came totally out of the blue I am very sad to lose a colleague who I value for her honest and forthright manner, her passion and commitment for caring about her constituents and of course her Yorkshire sense of humour.

Cllr Gunnell is liked and respected by the people in Micklegate and in lot of cases she was the first choice of contact for many residents with problems and concerns. Her independence and personal ratings enable her to buck the Labour trend in 2015 and got her re-elected as the senior councillor in the ward.

Cllr Gunnell was very welcoming to Cllr Hayes and myself when we joined the ward team and shared her experience and knowledge of the ongoing and past problems and projects in the ward. In the our rainbow ward, we all agreed that the interested of the residents trump any party politics.

I had also the pleasure to work with her as the chair of Communities and Environment Policy and Scrutiny Committee, where she was not just very open for suggestions and topics from the other members but also championed the fight against domestic violence and hate crimes and made it a priority in bringing it back on the agenda time after time.

In 2015 I felt for her when  Labour did not select her as the local candidate for the parliamentary seat and I was sad by the recent decision of the Labour group to replace her on the Audit and Governance Committee, where her continuous persistence was very effective and she was always a good ally in getting onto the bottom of a question, report or incident.

We are losing a genuine hard working and caring York councillor.

I wish Julie all the best in the future, success in her new job, good times with friends and family and more precious and joyful moments with her little grandson. You will be missed!

Did you know you can pay your Council Tax in #York in instalments or get Council tax support?

Council Tax is a local tax on domestic properties. It is based on one of eight ‘valuation bands’ according to a property’s value on 1 April 1991.Council Tax is usually paid by the occupants of the property. This year Council tax will go up by 3.7 per cent.

City of York Council is responsible for collecting Council Tax which funds about 20% of local public services, including:

  • refuse collection
  • social services
  • environmental health
  • education

Another (approximate) 20% of Council Tax is used to help fund police, fire and public transport services.

Domestic council tax can be set up in the following instalment plans:

  • one instalment
  • two instalments
  • ten instalments
  • twelve instalments

Most bills are set to ten instalments, so if you wish to change it, please contact the council tax department.

Council tax support

Council Tax Support (CTS) is a type of discount off your council tax bill. It replaced ‘Council Tax Benefit on 1 April 2013.

CTS is a means tested discount based on your household income and any savings, so people who get welfare benefits and those on low income are likely to qualify. If your savings exceed £16,000 you will not be eligible unless you receive pension credit ‘guarantee credit’.

  • 77.5% for people who are of working age
  • 100% for people of pension credit age

Environment Agency #York Quarterly Newsletter on #Flooding #Micklegate

Following the public exhibition in November, the Environment Agency has stated producing a quarterly newsletter to update interested residents on the flood defence work in York. They have produced the first of these newsletters, focussing on bringing residents up to speed on all that has happened so far, with the intention that future editions can focus more on specific current issues or schemes. Their first newsletter was distributed electronically last Monday, to those who have provided them with their details over the past year.

At this time it is the EAs intention to produce an digital newsletter, in order to allow it to be shared easily. Please feel free to distribute this newsletter onwards. Any residents who would like to be added to the distribution list can contact the EA at yorkfloodplan@environment-agency.gov.uk

Ceilidh at the Guildhall on 24th February #York

You can join for a Ceilidh at the Guildhall on Friday 24th February. This may be the last chance for a while to dance in this beautiful hall before the site is redeveloped. It is also an enjoyable, family-friendly opportunity to find out more about the work of St Nicks charity (registered as Friends of St Nicholas Fields), which includes collaborations with the city council on One Planet York, kerbside recycling and other projects.
