Marching Backwards on the Climate – Climate march in #York on 07/05

Saturday 7th May – Assembly 12noon in St Helen’s Square

Over the weekend of the 7th and 8th May, groups around Britain are organising climate marches with a difference: marching backwards to signify the many ways this government is ‘going backwards’ on the climate. From cutting renewable energy subsidies to pushing fracking, this government is anything but ‘the greenest government ever’. Until this Winter, they were also cutting flood defence money – a disaster for York.

York Climate Action is organising a march in York. The plan is to gather in St Helen’s Square, outside the Mansion House, at 12noon on Saturday 7th. Everyone will then march backwards to Parliament Street. There will be some Cameron and Osborne masks available for people to wear on the back of their heads, too! Walking backwards is optional – there are also people needed to hand out leaflets to the public explaining what is going on and plenty of stewards to guide the march and try to stop people tripping over!

Once the march reach Parliament Street, there will be a short rally with speakers from various local groups including York Central MP Rachael Maskell. If you want to get involved in planning and promoting the march, there will be a meeting on Tuesdays 12th and 26th April at 7.30pm in the Waggon and Horses on Lawrence Street.
